As part of our business unit for accessibility and user-friendliness - Broken Image - we met a few days ago via video conference with teachers and learners from the Stuttgart Vocational Training Centre of Nikolauspflege. We have been working with this foundation for visually impaired people for years and support their BigBlueButton instance.
Using a real task ("Search the Internet for dates of IHK courses for data protection officers ..."), we demonstrated our special usability test in order to gain further test subjects for this important issue.
We had already trialled the associated thinking-aloud process in advance: assisted by a screen reader, we checked several pizza delivery platforms and food delivery services for accessibility for non-sighted people. The conclusion was quite sobering: blind people are apparently not the target group of these providers. In some cases, they would have starved to death if they had to rely on the service :(
To ensure that something finally changes here and that participation is possible for all people without exception - despite any limitations or impairments - we want to work with those affected to help remove digital barriers on websites. A first step is to raise awareness and sensitivity for this important topic in society.
